A few days ago,
my homegurl Coral brought me some of her old fashion pieces.
Usually, I have to be very careful with which articles I accept.
I’m really bad about taking found fibers, fabrics, and fashion and being like,
“OoooooOooooh!!! I can make something outta this!!!”
….and then not doing it.
But Coral and I have really similar style and fashion sense,
and she came with a bunch of really cool pieces.
It was hard for me to be good and say no!
Especially since so many of the pieces would work really well as part of the Circus Gypsies and Gentlemen collection…
Case in point:
This gorgeous scarf that she had cut a hole in!
I was like, “Guuuuuurll! Looks like you were tryin to make a circle skirt!!!”
She had been, but had cut the waistband hole too big…
“I can fix it!!! Haha thanks for doin’ half the project for me!!!”
If you want to make a circle skirt,
first measure your waist at the point where you want the skirt to fall (hips/natural waist).
This will be the circumference of the circle you cut out.
Make sure the circle you cut out is in the middle of your fabric,
or you can make it off-center for an asymmetric look.
Because the waistband hole was cut too large,
I had to gather the fabric around the waistband.
If the hole is the appropriate size,
you can sew the elastic into a circle
and then wrap the fabric, wrong side up, around the elastic.
Use lots of pins to hold it in place and sew it down to create the waistband.
When making a waistband, never sew the fabric into the elastic.
It can rip the fabric and stitching when the elastic stretches.
You’re essentially creating a sewn tube around the elastic.
You can hem the bottom to finish the skirt,
but I left the hem of mine alone to give it a more worn, gypsy look.
However you do it, this piece is super easy to make!
Just make sure to use lots of pins and
HAVE FUN!!!
